Featured Band - Boneshaker

Good day folks. Time for another featured band here at DGR! Today, I wish to bring to you a talented hard hitting band called Boneshaker.

Boneshaker are a metal band -

Troy Alexander on guitar
Roy Alexander on bass
Sam Leighton on drums

Listening to their music is an interesting experience. A lot of influences in there to grasp. A favourite for me would be "Bad Karma Mad Man". There is an almost psychedelic intro to this track but don't be fooled...it soons turns out to be powered metal guitars and vocals that are potent.

For those who like metal music, this is traditional metal with a twist of energy and will guarantee a power kick. It is the lime to kick the tequila into action (wink).

There is a nostalgic feeling to their music too. A vague recollection of days spent in happy times just chilling to some great music that takes you away from reality for a while and of course allows you to identitify meanings in your life.

So, ladies and gentlemen, metallers and music lovers, ghosts and ghouls alike, please take the time out to support Boneshaker by clicking on the links below.

Congratulations on being a Featured Artist here at DGR Boneshaker!

Peace all, Poppy Ruth Silver

Featured Musician - Vlay

Hello all!

Hope this blog finds you all in good spirits. Its that time again folks. Featured Musician time! The feature this week goes to a talented band named Vlay. Some of you may have aready heard their music via FB or Reverbnation. If you have not heard their music, then you are in for a treat!

"Vlay's music is a mix of hard rock, metal & blues with a latin influence. The music changes like a chameleon blending styles that creates Vlay's unique sound. In todays complex music industry having a unique style is the only way to survive. Our musical goals are to create music that makes you want to bang your head and shake your ass. Gary Vlay Gabriel's undulating cadence at vocals sets Vlays unique style. Along with Abram Ortiz's musical insight & genius producing talents. And rounding out the cast is the Legend John Sorenson which brings his classic rock and blues styles at guitar"

Vlay says "Without music the world would be mute. Rock On!!!!!"

They class themselves as rock, alternative, metal and blues and are from North Monterey. Their influences range from Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, Pantera, Godsmack,Three Days Grace, Disturbed, Slipknot and many more.

Band members include -

Gary Vlay Gabriel - Vocals and guitar
Abe Ortiz - drums, bass, guitar and keyboards
John Sorenson - lead Guitar

What more can be added to that?!  But you know me...there is always something to add (wink). I have been listening to the music of Vlay for a while now and what I find so intensely moving about it is the passion. Yes, all musicians have a passion in their deliverance of their music but Vlay's is belting power.

Not only do you get to hear his voice, deep and raw, emotional and purging, you are confronted with intricate guitar work, hard and tender, transcending and inviting. Their songs are designed with compassion and need, want and heartfelt emotion and allow the listener to breathe in time with their desires and need of release.

"Nasty Habit" is a song I shall never forget. I remember hearing this song and was blown away by the stamina and energy. I must admit I did smile and even share a laugh at the boldness of the lyrics. See...to me, rock has got to have guts and this song? Well...don't take my word for it, go hear for yourself! Its power won't leave you in a hurry, I can assure you (smiling again) and aside from the sheer penetration of Gary's vocals throughout this song, the guitars are amazing. Stunning work and build up in fact.

"Creep" and yes you guessed it, a cover of the Radiohead song is mind blowing in its deliverance. Listening to this, I am rendered not only moved but distanced through emotion. The guitar work, as always, is tenderly conveyed and the vocals to this song are luring and you can hear just how much the song is felt by the band. Nuff said I think. As I sit here listening to it, tears are always on the verge of falling. Why? Because Gary's voice yearns in the song and shows the listener the potent meaning of it.

"Son of Sam" is a energetic rock piece of work with an almost psychedelic feel to the guitar work and then bam! All hits in a frenzy of passionate rock. For those who like great lyrics as well as balanced guitars and well timed drumming, this will rock your world!

It is hard to pinpoint a single song that I like the most but I shall leave you to interpret Vlay's music for yourselves. One thing is certain. If you have a true, and I mean true love for music, you will see nothing but talent in Vlay. They reach out with conviction and make you want more. You find yourself singing their songs when away from the screen and even in the shower. What? Good therapy is singing in the shower (laughing).

So ladies and Gentlemen, without warbling on more, I shall include Vlay's links below in the hope you pop over and hit like and listen and support them. I am off to listen to "Bad Day". A personal favourite of mine.

I bring to you Vlay.

Peace all! Poppy.

Featured Musician - Bruce Leitch

Good day DGR!

I hope you are all well? It soon comes around to post another fabulous musician here at the DGR blogspot. Anyone else not now where the time goes? Maybe Mercury in Retrograde has stolen it of late (smiling).

Today I wish to bring to you the music of Bruce Leitch

Bruce is a musician from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He desrcibes his music as experimental, electronic, nanostudio and noise.

Bruce creates myriad soundscapes that unnerve and open the heart. To listen to his music is to experience a vastness of sorts, a void and yet a moment of clarity. It is to feel the tangible terror we daily live under and also the enlightening emotion of liberation, both are possible at the same time.

Listening to his music is inspiring and unsettling. For those who need something different to reflect upon, I highly recommend Bruce's music. It will leave a sting and also a soothing quality to your day. It will leave you questioning and we forget to do so at times when we take things at face value. Sometimes it is good to delve deeper in order to seek answers for the soul.

His music is raw and calm. It is open to interpretation and also suggestive. It is a soundscape of many intentions and intelligently delivered with insight and wisdom.

So folks. Please go and have a listen to Bruce's work at the links below and leave a comment, share, like etc.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Humans and Aliens - I bring to you - Bruce Leitch!

Peace all.

DGR Featured Musician - Mount Analogue

Good day to you all. Once more, it is time to feature an outstanding musician. This Feature goes to Mount Analogue. A musician from Glasgow in the UK.

To listen to Mount Analogue is know the ebb and flow of emotion. I have rapidly grown to appreciate and love the myriad influences in Mount Analogue's work. His devotion to the intricate journey of sound is awe inspiring. His music is a soundscape to unsettle, intrigue, quench and provoke thought. The surreal quality to his music is luring in many aspects and the unsettling aura to it will leave you feeling both entertained as well as intrigued.

If there was a chance to listen to music that inspires, moves, washes you ashore, lets you drown, gives you more questions than answers and lets your heart purge infinitely, this is it :) There is always an interesting, emotive moment. Always a chance to address the soul's wandering thoughts and distance yourself from this so called reality. Mount Analogue has many projects on the go and is always releasing top quality music to relish and change the perception. His music challenges boundaries put in place to control us all.

Mount Analogue also owns and operates Give It Water Records. He has a diverse taste in music and film and likes many genres, including Jim O'Rourke, Tortoise, Steve Reich, Cocteau Twins, Angelo Badalamenti, Ulver, Cornelius Cardew, Stanley Kubrick, Philip Glass, Ben Frost, Brian Eno, Stars Of The Lid, Matmos, Andrei Tarkovsky, Labradford, John Cage, Stereolab, Einstürzende Neubauten, Autechre, Fennesz, David Lynch, Arvo Part and Gaspar Noé.

All in all, Mount Analogue's music is layered with perfection. A dream within dream. A chillout to distorted landscapes. A whirlpool of emotion that hits hard and leaves you dazed.

So without another sentence folks, hit the links below and give this awesome artist some credit where it is due. I bring to you, Mount Analogue.

DGR Brings you RavenHeart

Today DGR brings you RavenHeart.

Ravenheart are a UK based hard rock and metal band who fuse together darkness, gothic elements and rock metal. Their music has immense passion and the guitar work is fantastically powerful, top notch for those who like a good guitar wail amidst the song. The vocals are raw and passionate and there is almost a punk type feel to some of their songs. It seems diversity is abundant within their music.

In particular, "Geared for War" has a primal energy to it. It reminds me of a metal version of New Model Army in a way. The vibe from this song is reeling and engaging, full throttle!

Another track of theirs that lures and demands attention is "One Eyed God". Brilliant lead up to what becomes a hard journey into rock/metal, divinely enriched with a sensual essence.

"Big Bad Wolf" is an intriguing song. It reaches crescendo in a matter of seconds and allows you to divulge in the wickedly dark side your soul is always fascinated by.

For those who like it hard and raw, RavenHeart offers those elements and much more.

They state their influences as - "Iron maiden, aerosmith, manowar, rhapsody, WASP, Whitesnake, early Motley Crue, Black Sabbath, Dio, Steve Vai, Billy Sheehan, Racer X, Randy Rhoads and lots of other cool "heavy" metal bands."

Hard to argue with that! I can hear many such influences in their music.

So folks ~ go treat yourself to a bit of hard darkness and primal power by clicking the links below and enjoy the experience. RavenHeart offer what original rock and metal have maintained all these years...a powerful and energetic fusion of guitar mayhem and deep vocals, you will love them!

DGR Brings You Ul2raViolet

Good day folks. It has hit that time again for another band review and this week I am honoured to bring to your attention the work of Ul2raViolet.

Ul2raViolet is Andrew Manning from the UK.

He started writing electronic music in May 2011 for fun, then started networking with other artists whom he has collaborated with over time. These include: The X, Chrissyohh, Delta Pavonis, Nexus Of Crisis and Orbitally Re-Arranged Monatomic Elements. He also works with abstract artists who have allowed him to use their work as cover art such as Mike Henry and James VerDoorn. Andrew has written 6 albums of material in this time.

Andrew's motto is -

"Music is the universal language. The most important commodity you have is imagination & the desire to create. Ul2raViolet endeavours to create beauty, simplicity & perfection."

Listening to Ul2raViolet is to experience new realms. It is so electronically layered, it deserves taking the time out to listen to all of the tracks from his albums in their entirety for they all blend with such a creative infusion it is mind blowing to hear the depths of which they speak.

It is all too easy to analyse music and miss the point of the artist's creation. That is why with Ul2raViolet, I merely wish to explain the emotions from listening. It is music to liberate, suffocate and entice, mostly, it is music to free the mind from its prison of control.Whatever your genre of pleasure, Ul2raViolet offers something for all.

I have had the honour of collaborating with Andrew and his devotion and talent are awe inspiring.

Ul2raViolet takes you through the avant-garde, melancholy and electronic futuristic vibe, all at the same time. It is hard to choose a favourite track to be honest. Two favourite tracks for me would be from his latest album "Mbl.1" which was released this year (2013).

"Ărtэmis ĐäяκWiɲg" is a fantastic track of ebb and flow. It is the pulsating energy of a storm. A whirlpool of chaos amidst serenity. It is darkness blended with the knowledge that there is also light in the strangest of places/emotions. This is a great track and offers so much freedom of thought. It is metaphor!

"Darkestnoon" is another excellent track off this album. The programing is intelligent to say the least. The build up of the song is magnificent and leads your senses to a point of wanting more and yet relishing what you are given. The whole atmosphere to this song is eerie leading up to 3.07 and then boom, the tension is released and is felt with power! It throbs with life and decay. It offers epiphany and the urge to scream. It is a walk in a dark forest in search of who knows what one will find. In short, it is a masterpiece of musical programing and thought.

Andrew has an impressive discography and his website can be found below. The website alone is wonderful to walk around, like a gallery of sorts. There you can find where to purchase his music and what his current projects are, he always has something on the go.

I really am in awe of his talent, for those who truly appreciate music in every sense, this is a treat to the mind, heart and soul.

So fellow artists and supporters, pop over to his website and FB page and show a talented musician the support he so deserves via the two links below! Peace to you all! Poppy.

CD Review - Sills and Smith "No Way In, No Way Out"

Sills and Smith are based in Ottawa and class themselves as folk/rock.

Members are Jeremy Sills, Frank Smith and Jonathan Edwards. Frank Smith is the main vocalist and lyricist of the band. Jeremy Sills and Jonathan Edwards share electric and acoustic guitar duties, backing vocals with drums and bass played by Jonathan.

The band have released two albums: "Uncertain Vista" (2011) and "No Way In, No Way Out" (2012). Their new album is set for release in late Spring 2013.

“No Way In, No Way Out” is a very nicely produced album that shows a good progression in terms of production from their previous CD, 2011’s “Uncertain Vista”. Their style varies from Midwest Indie Rock to 90’s 4AD and even has elements of folk, early goth and interesting alternative experimentation at times.

The drum and guitar sounds work really well together and the plaintive vocals sit well in the mix. Vocal influences seem to range from Nick Cave/Interpol/Michael Stipe to Lloyd Cole and The Red House Painters. There is a strong sense of empathy in many of the vocals.

If you like the styles of music described above, you will be likely to appreciate the song writing which is generally well thought out and full of diversity and innovation, just where it is least expected.
Arrangements are simple and not over busy and this helps bring out the songs to strongly showcase the band’s potential.

Personally, three of my favourite tracks from the album would be “Clouds”, “Radiance” and “Pain”.

“Clouds” seems to have a Red House Painters influence infused into it. Nice chiming chorus guitars and a folk influence from the use of a pedal steel guitar.

“Radiance” is very emotive lyrical imagery and a lovely build up to the song. It has a good musical balance that has that happy/sad feel that could go either way.

“Pain” is one of the most interesting tracks. It has a dynamic that usurps listener expectation in the light of previous tracks and has an experimental edge that borders on Bauhaus/early goth. For me it is one of the most innovative tracks on the album.

Another stand out track would be “Would it all be Different” which has a beautiful, sad, unrequited feel where “luck is measured in a thimble.” It is a unique track full of layers and dimensions and a courageous track which culminates in an ending that veers towards a celebration of Pink Floyd.

The album is available from the many links included on their Reverbnation site. If you like good quality, alternative music from independent bands not influenced by corporate greed then this is a recommended release.

I look forward to the new album later this year and wish Sills and Smith all success from the DGR Team.

DGR's First Band Review...Meet Crimson Clocks

Greetings all!

It brings me great pleasure to review the first band here.

A band called Crimson Clocks from Birmingham in the UK.

Crimson Clocks set out to offer a myriad of sounds. They class themselves as rock, jazz, reggae and generally dark yet I also hear many more genres within their music such as medieval, folk, gothic and classical. Their music covers many topics such as the devil, revenge, Celtic Mythology and cats.

I particularly like their song “Red Violin”.

This particular song is laced with medieval, dark folk quality and the vocals are interestingly melancholic. For those who prefer the darker side to music, this is a treat to the senses. It seems to hold an ancient power, a mythological aura.

They have many influences and interests such as The Doors, Nick Cave, The Clash, Primus, baroque and classical. Sci-Fi to vampires, cats to Dr Who but to name a few. It is not often a band encompasses so many genres and pulls it off with a tasty power. The production is excellent and for anyone who likes to mix their listening pleasure by one band, Crimson Clocks are a must.

Crimson Clocks are –

Linzi - Vocalist
Jo - Violinist/Oboist
Colin - Bassist
Steve - Drummer

You can find their music at the following links below.

Crimson Clocks, Ladies and Gentlemen, are an exotic blend of talent. May you enjoy the journey as much as I have. Now…time for “Gonna Get It”.

Peace to all

DGR Attends Derby Ink Invitational/ReverbNation Concert Series - Part II

The Derby Ink Invitational/ReverbNation Concert Series

An epic 3-day high octane arts and entertainment event fueled by a 500+ tattoo-vendor expo featuring over 200 masters of tattoo artistry, a fast paced banked-track roller derby tournament with $20K in cash prizes broadcast live on pay-per-view, unparalleled artistic gallery displays and live hard-core rock bands that will bring the house down.

This is how their adverts read, and to those that were in attendance for the three day event, including yours truly, the above description was a total understatement.

Having been my first roller derby experience, aside from having watched it on the television quite some years ago, I was immediately drawn into the fast paced and exciting world of roller derby.

I have been to my share of Expo's and Conventions in all my years, and I must say that this one was ran very well, seemed to go fairly smoothly and I must give props to all those people that put this together, being their first year, as they did an amazing job. I did speak with one of the coordinators and they actually weren't sure if they were going to have another event next year, when I replied that would be such an injustice.  Once you get all of the hiccups out of the way, things will always run that much smoother.  You are always better off the second year in because you know which mistakes not to make like the inaugural year.

I would suggest that anyone into Roller Derby, Tattooing and Live Bands trek out to Harrisburg PA should be hold their sophomore event as I will be there hands down. We're actually awaiting news of if and when that will be going down so that DarkGift Radio can reserve their vendor table and actually be a part of their next event. Hell, maybe even do a live radio broadcast from the venue, that would be killer.

Everyone we came in contact with was downright nice to all of us and the bands that we saw were kick ass. Props to Scars of Envy of Red Bank NJ and AUG of Wallington, NJ.  Should you want to bookmark their url for news and updates, you can goto DerbyInk.Net for more information.

Thanks again to everyone at Derby Ink Invitational for putting on an awesome event and look forward to next years show.

Good day DGR Nation!

May this blog find you all well and in good spirits.

It brings me sublime pleasure to write here to you all. It also makes me feel blessed and happy to be part of the writing staff here at DarkGift Radio, it is an honour. I aim to write some rockin reviews for bands here and hope it will encourage listeners to check out their music.

So many bands are not heard away from the mainstream reviews and there is so much talent out there to be heard and deserving of support. So, from here on in, stay tuned for some showcasing of awesome artists!

For those who don't know much about me, I am a writer and in a band called Orbitally Re-Arranged Monatomic Elements. I have a love for photography and try to exorcise the demons within through myriad ways of purging through art.

As an artist myself, I realise how difficult it is to get your music out there. Self promotion is not an easy road to travel, nevertheless, we do. This is why I support many artists. It is like a butterfly effect. The more people network and share the word about the talent out there, the more it gets seen/heard. A simple fact that is sometimes forgotten.

So, without further rambling, it is great to part of this exciting project and hope you all enjoy the reviews and articles to come.

Peace to all

Poppy (UK Director of Promotions DGR)

Saturday Blog Update

We just wanted to shoot out yet another update here at DGR Blog Central: We've added all the major social networking links for the station and DJ's along the right side of the blog page for your convenience, as well as some other information. I am very pleased to announce that we've recruited our first member of the writing staff, our very own U.K. Director of Promotions, Poppy Silver will be contributing some music related articles and musical reviews, by bands interested in sending us material for review, when the time in her busy schedule allows. I have asked her to put together a brief post to introduce herself to you all which she should have posted up very soon. We're all very excited to utilize her natural talents as a writer as well as give her a few more very important and vital responsibilities.

Anyone else interested in writing segments, interviews, cd reviews or helping out in any other way can please feel free to contact me so that we can discuss if and how your services can be utilized. We'll be adding a bunch of new content to the streaming server this week as well as some website enhancements as well so please be patient with us during this period of expansion if some links are not yet functioning.  We also have finalized the new t-shirt designs and are awaiting for some freed up capital to get the first run printed up. After that we will be looking into coffee mugs, caps and some bumper stickers.
